    Bookkeeping businesses aren’t lucrative.

    Bookkeepers are becoming irrelevant in today’s world.

    Truth: Computers and robots are taking over a lot of jobs in our modern world – but the jobs of the future are the ones that can’t be done by machines.

    Bookkeepers who become their clients’ trusted advisors will never need to worry about becoming irrelevant in our workplace.

    Robots don’t understand human behavior, and they can’t do non-repetitive, service-oriented work (like bookkeeping!). The knowledge and unique services that you bring to your clients are what make you invaluable – and the more you focus on being indispensable, the more clients will line up to work with you.

    Myth #3

    It’s too hard to find bookkeeping clients.

    Truth: There are actually clients everywhere for bookkeepers, because every business needs to take care of their books.

    Most bookkeepers don’t know how to market their businesses, build their networks, or sell their services. That’s totally understandable, because it’s not really the thing bookkeepers like to do.

    It’s not our expertise. A lot of bookkeepers say, “I just wish I could hire someone else to do all that marketing stuff.”

    But just because you you don’t have marketing and sales skills now, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any clients out there – it just means you need to learn those skills and use them on a regular basis!

    Once you build those build your marketing skills, start putting yourself out there, and get more comfortable with sales, you will find that there is business everywhere.

    You will start attracting clients you love to work with, and make more money in your bookkeeping business.

    And the good news is: You don’t have to feel slimy and sleazy when you’re selling your services. Yes, you may need to get a little uncomfortable, but there are plenty of ways to sell your bookkeeping services that don’t make you feel like a pushy salesperson.

    Hiring great employees to scale your business is nearly impossible.

    Truth: If bookkeepers follow a proven, successful hiring system and have details standard operating procedures in place they will learn how to find the right staff without the headaches.

    Many bookkeeping business owners have made the mistake of hiring people solely based on what they wrote on their resumes.

    As we all know, some people do like to exaggerate how accomplished they are.

    By following a successful step-by-step roadmap, which includes a job related skills test, you will eliminate those who don’t tell the truth.

    Bookkeeper business owners will actually get to measure the real abilities of candidates.

    At the end of the day, can the candidate do the job? By following tested hiring systems, owners will be able to.

    I have to accept any clients no matter what.

    Truth: For bookkeepers starting out, this may be the case for a short period of time, but once you get a few clients, you’ll need to discard the ones that are causing you problems.
    If you have to chase after people to pay their bills or take time dealing with individuals who don’t respect you and your time, they’re not worth YOUR time.

    Yes, time is “money” and you won’t be making much of it if you have to confront those people all the time.

    The Real Secrets to Making More Money (and Having More Free Time) as a Bookkeeper

    You can’t build a successful business just taking the first clients that show up at your door.

    When you announce that you’re offering bookkeeping services, there will be certain number of clients who show up at your door.

    These will be the first people who show up – but they won’t necessarily be the best (or highest paying) clients.

    These folks probably won’t be low-maintenance, pleasant clients, either – they might be demanding business owners who call you at odd hours, demand that you be at their beck and call, constantly try to convince you to charge less for your services, and pay your invoices late every month.

    And because you’re a great bookkeeper, those less-than-ideal clients start to refer you to other businesses. Unfortunately, like attracts like – which means they’ll refer you to business owners similar to themselves.

    Before you know it, you have unintentionally created a stressful, unrewarding business. You’re constantly tense, you’re not getting paid what you’re worth, and your clients are demanding and difficult.
